Mistake 1: Adding chemicals without testing first

The single most expensive habit in pool care is dosing by eye. Adding chlorine or algaecide because the water “looks a bit off,” without first testing pH, alkalinity, and sanitiser levels, is like salting a dish you haven’t tasted.

Check expiry dates, store them sealed and cool, and consider a liquid test kit or digital tester for more accuracy. If you’re making expensive decisions based on a colour on a strip, it’s worth spending a little to make sure that colour is telling the truth.
